Our Heritage

In 1948, Jack Horan founded our company in downtown Cincinnati. Today, through our relentless focus on satisfying our clients, we have grown to be one of the region's largest privately held insurance and financial service organizations.

Over 65 years, HORAN has developed plans to impact costs, protect wealth and insure lives. It's the foundation of what we do.

HORAN is one of the largest privately-held insurance and financial services organizations in the Tri-State area. With a focus on Health, Wealth and Life, HORAN offers employee benefits solutions to more than 500 companies and its health and life insurance operations cover more than 250,000 lives.

For employers we design benefit programs that contain costs while enhancing employee satisfaction. For individuals we manage investments and insurance for long-term wealth accumulation and its eventual transfer to family. Our integrity and industry knowledge are foundations upon which HORAN has built a reputation for delivering high quality products and services.

HORAN is now led by a second generation of family management under Terry Horan. The company has expanded with Corporate Headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio and regional offices in Dayton, Ohio, and Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, serving more than 6,500 clients in 40 states. With a staff of over 130, HORAN was selected as one of Fortune Magazine's Top 100 Great Places to work in the medium-sized category in 2016. In 2015, HORAN was named one of the Top 100 Healthiest Workplaces in America.

The Cincinnati Business Courier named HORAN a Best Places to Work winner in 2009 and in 2015 and named a finalist for that award every year from 2009 to 2016. HORAN was also named a winner of the Cincinnati Business Courier's Healthiest Employer award in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Dayton Business Journal named HORAN a winner of the Dayton Healthiest Employer Award in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Newsletters, compliance alerts, webinars and seminars and the HORAN quarterly magazine health.wealth.life are provided to our clients to give further guidance as a part of HORAN’s commitment to educate on best practice strategies to support individual and business objectives across “health, wealth and life”.

The American College Center for Ethics in Financial Services promotes ethical behavior by offering programs that go beyond the "rules" of market conduct to help executives and producers be more sensitive to ethical issues and think more critically about ethical solutions. The Center's interactive continuing education courses, forums and workshops are committed to helping practitioners think critically and behave ethically, even in the absence of clear direction.

The Center also serves as a resource for cutting-edge research and discussion of emerging ethical issues in the financial services industry. Because of its unbiased academic role, the Center can be objective in helping executives, producers and regulators deal with the ethical implications of public policy positions.

Accordingly, our Human Resources policies and practices are built on dedication to assisting every employee in reaching his or her full potential in both performance and reward. We promote based on merit and from within whenever possible.

HORAN recognizes that the skills and knowledge of its employees are critical to the success of the organization. The firm’s educational assistance program encourages personal development through formal and informal education so that employees can maintain and improve job-related skills or enhance their ability to compete for reasonably attainable jobs within the firm. HORAN provides on-site training throughout the year. HORAN sessions educate employees on products and services, industry changes and trend, skill improvement, management and leadership performance. A specific number of hours are required for all employees.

In addition to the internal training, certification and industry specific accreditation courses are paid for by the company. Incentives, bonuses and salary increases are tied to education which indicates the firm’s desire to achieve high standards of knowledge and excellence to support clients.

HORAN is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities where our employees live and work. We believe we have a responsibility to serve our regional community a good corporate citizen to create strong communities that increase the economic vitality and quality of our neighborhoods. As a company and individually, we support initiatives that educate, enrich, and heal. The professionals of HORAN make personal financial contributions and give their time to numerous regional organizations such as United Way, regional universities, Dayton Go Red, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Lighthouse Youth Services, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati Works, the West Chester Liberty Chamber, Dayton Development Coalition, the Northern Kentucky Chamber and Cincinnati USA. In 2014, HORAN employees contributed over 2,000 hours of volunteer time to charitable, community and civic organizations. HORAN, as a company, provided financial support to over 85 organizations in the Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Dayton market areas in 2014.

We offer scholarships for students attending Xavier University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University, University of Dayton and Wright State University. To date, HORAN has contributed upwards of $159,500 in scholarship support to 78 students representing more than 41 client companies.
